Dear Bud,
Some time ago I sent this to Tennis Magazine and it evidently may not be published, so I want to be sure you know how much our family appreciated yours and ViJay ‘s /Anand’s kindness to our daughter that day at Bretton Woods.
Most Sincerely,
The Jenkins family

Letters to the Editors

Dear People,
The following is from a letter which I thought had been mailed some years ago. It was in support of nominating Bud Collins to the Tennis Hall of Fame. Unfortunately, it was misplaced and never mailed.
Although Bud is now deservedly in the Tennis Hall of Fame, when I came across this recently, I feel it is so “Bud Collins†I should send it along, anyway. Bud has certainly brought expertise, outrageous good humor, and class to his profession for these many years.
The letter shows his exceptional compassion and thoughtfulness at his best.
At Bretton Woods in New Hampshire, some 37 years ago, and after watching an exciting match between Rod Laver and I believe ViJay Armitraj (it may have been Jimmy Connors) a number of children approached Rod Laver for his autograph, among them my 5 year old tennis enthusiast daughter, Betsey.
As she was about to get her tennis program signed, another well known Aussie player who was running the tennis camp, stopped her and asked if she was in the tennis camp group.
When she said no, he said “sorry kid, this is only for the tennis campers.â€
As Betsey began to dissolve in tears, a bearded pixie named Bud Collins who had been standing nearby, knelt down and started chatting with her. He then took her aside, and introduced her to ViJay. The two then walked her to a nearby court where Anand Armitraj and another name player were hitting. They introduced her to a number of other major players who gave her autographs.
It created a beautiful moment, and a memory she can treasure forever.
Bud is certainly deserving of all the accolades and honors the tennis world can bestow on him. Likewise the Armitraj brothers who have also shown the exceptional graciousness and good sportsmanship that will keep tennis at the highest levels in the sports world.
Sincerely,
Bill Jenkins

Bud,
When I lived in Boston, I used to love reading your annual column in support of Sportsmen’s Tennis Club. Now that Jim and Gloria have passed, how is the club doing? I would love for you to post an article on here and something on twitter.
Very truly yours,
~Duey Evans

I agree that a Grand Slam is all 4 tournaments-is it only if you win all 4 in the same calender year? Or could it be if you won The US open first then the other 3? In that case you would have won all 4 consecutively and in 12 months but not in the same calender year?

A GRAND SLAM can only happen by winning the four majors in one calendar year. Many people want it to be different but that would dilute the accomplishment.
Keep on hacking, Bud

I was just wondering if Bud used the same wardrobe theory as the late, great Lindsay Nelson.

Bud,
When are you going to write a book which covers all your amusing experiences and anecdotes (and antics) that occurred during your life covering tennis.
Example: The time you cut down flags at the Ilalian Open…to make pants.
We all want to hear about this stuff.
