Founded in 1982, with production beginning in 1986, TarraWarra Vineyard is one of the Yarra Valley’s gems. Located 60 kms (37 miles) east of Melbourne, its Estate Chardonnay and Pinot Noirs are consistent prize winners. Architect, Allan Powell’s winning design among Melbourne architects, suggests a ship rising from the landscape. The building was opened in 2004. In addition to the beautifully manicured plots of grapes, there is an excellent restaurant and a gallery of modern Australian art donated to the state by Eva and Marc Bensen

In the first two weeks of January 2010, we drove from Sydney in Australia’s New South Wales, through Kangaroo Valley and along the coast to Melbourne, a beautiful trip.

Mt. Kosciuszko is the highest mountain in Australia, not really all that high at 2,228 meters. Nevertheless, it is the apex of this continent and I wanted to climb it. Bud nicely went part of the way with me on a bright sunny summer day. Our main problem was a high wind. There were masses of wildflowers, great vistas and a lot of granite boulders.

Probably I should clean my walking shoes. But the smudges of muck and salt from Lake Eyre remind me of the wondrous journey into the South Australian Outback, of unimaginable vastness and sights, and extremely friendly – if few – people encountered along the way. Besides, I knew that snow at home, Boston, would do the cleaning job.
