LOOKING FOR COOL, RODDICK VOWS TO RELAX AS U.S. FINISHES 4-1 WIN

Can Andy Roddick be calm - and cool, too?

That question wasn't answered over the first Davis Cup weekend of the year at La Jolla's Beach & Tennis Club where Pacific surf and Andy's serve made the big noises. While the waves came in steadily, Roddick's surges were uneven, and America's mojo man of tennis (as one sponsor would have it) had to settle for a personal split as the U.S. finished off crippled Romania, 4-1, yesterday, and advanced to the April quarter-finals of the world-wide chase for the sterling tub.

Where were Federer, Nadal, Moya, Hewitt?

Those are the questions that will be asked when people look back at the Davis Cup chase for 2006.

With No. 1 Roger Federer aboard, Switzerland might well have won the Cup, a prize that has never graced his homeland. As it was the Swiss fell to understrength Australia, 3-2. But Roger chose not to play, puzzling many of us and probably millions of his compatriots. Coupling Federer with the swiftly improving Stanislas Wawrinka (winner of both singles against the Aussies) would have made the Swiss very difficult to beat.
